Adopt A Pet ADOPTING A PET

Adoption of a pet from the Bay Area Humane Society & Animal Shelter is a simple and easy process.

We recommend that you plan to bring members of your household to meet and interact with the pet(s).

NEW! Meet Your Match™ >>

If you already own a dog or cat, you may want to bring your pet(s) to interact with the new pet you wish to adopt, to ensure compatibility between the pets. Please spend at least a half hour getting acquainted with the pet you wish to adopt.

Adoption Fees >>

IF YOU FIND A PET YOU WANT TO ADOPT

Complete an adoption application form and specify the animal(s) in which you are interested.

BAHS staff will offer suggestions about the health care and training your pet will require and will provide you with any available information concerning the pet(s) you have chosen.

Animals are adopted out on a first come, first serve basis.

Please note that all stray animals will be held for eight days following admission and during this time will not be shown or made available for adoption. This allows a stray pet's owner time to find and claim their pet. An unclaimed, stray pet will be available for adoption on the ninth day following admission to the Shelter.

Our goal is 'SAME DAY SERVICE.' We do not accept multiple applications per pet or same party applications for more than one pet unless it is conjunction with any 'adoption special' we have available at the time you submit your application.

When you submit an application for the pet you are interested in, the adoption fee is also due and payable.

Pay an adoption fee (please bring picture identification, preferably a drivers license), and if the pet you have chosen is 4 months or older, we will set up transport to your veterinarian for the pet to be spayed or neutered. (Note: In the case of purebred animals, they will be transported to the vet regardless of age.)

If the pet you want is a dog or cat and has already been spayed or neutered, you will be able to take the pet home the same day you submit your application and payment, pending any medical needs the animal may have.

If the pet you want is a dog, cat or bunny that has NOT been spayed or neutered, BAHS requires that the animal be spayed or neutered at the time of the adoption. Transportation to an area veterinarian will be arranged by BAHS staff. You may choose a veterinarian from the list of participating veterinarians.

SPAY/NEUTER POLICY

This policy is applicable to all dog, cat, puppy, kitten and bunny adoptions. BAHS will transport all adopted animals to a local vet clinic for spay/neuter surgery. The adopter will pick up the pet from the vet clinic.
