THE LOST PET CLAIMING PROCESS

If you do find your lost pet at our shelter, here is some important information about bringing your family member back home:

Claiming is a process which occurs when an animal strays away from its owner for any of a number of reasons.  The stray may be picked up or reported by a concerned member of the community.  An animal control officer may be called to pickup the animal or the citizen may bring it in.  State law (SL) governs the requirements we must adhere to as an Animal Shelter.  The costs associated with the boarding, pickup and care of those strays are borne by taxpayers and the Shelter.  The Bay Area Humane Society and Animal Shelter makes every effort to provide care for these animals, adhere to the laws of the state of Wisconsin and collect necessary fees for boarding purposes.

WISCONSIN STATE LAW
Requirements Regarding Stray Animals Is very Clear And Must Be Adhered To.
  • All stray dogs and cats must be kept at least eight (8) calendar days from the date they were admitted.

  • All dogs must have a license.  Only Cats in Green Bay and Allouez must be licensed.

  • In order to obtain a license, proof of current rabies vaccination must be shown, or prepaid.

  • Animals must be claimed by the actual owner unless we receive permission from the owner or a valid license from the owner.

  • Rabies vaccinations are only valid if administered by a licensed Veterinarian.  Animals must be four (4) months old before being vaccinated.

  • Shelters are allowed to charge fees for the care of stray animals

  • Shelter personnel will attempt to locate the owner by looking through newspaper lost and found articles, lost and found cards at the Shelter or information from the person leaving the stray.

  • The owner must bring a certificate of rabies vaccination by a licensed Veterinarian, a pre-paid rabies vaccination receipt, and a form of picture identification (driver’s license).
